Extinguish Fire - Fire Safety

How do you extinguish fires?

This involves the elimination of one side of the fire triangle.
Starvation - remove the fuel, e.g. turn off the gas supply, drag burning pallets away from the fire.

Smothering - remove the oxygen supply or adding inert gas (without oxygen) to the burning mixture, e.g. fire blanket onto a pan, or using a foam extinguisher. Main risk is that the fire may reignite when foam (wet chemical used for fat fryers) or blanket is removed as heat will still be present.

Carbon dioxide is commonly used in extinguishers and nitrogen is used in the petrochemical industry. Smothering is only effective when the source of oxygen is air. It is ineffective when the substance that is burning contains oxygen.

Cooling - commonest, cheapest and most effective method. For example, water sprayed onto a fire, will cause the temperature to be lowered. The steam produced acts as a blanket to smother reducing the potential for further ignition. Dry powder extinguishers rapidly absorb the heat and also smother.

Safety and Information Signs - POSHE

Use of Safety Signs
  • The purpose of safety signs
  • A range of common safety signs: prohibition, warning, mandatory and safecondition signs in general workplace use
Safety and Information Signs

Signs combine shape, colour and a pictogram (symbol) to provide specific health and safety information. Being pictographic they are universal, and do not rely on language or the ability to read.

Safety Condition signs are square or rectangular in shape, and have a green background with white pictograms and lettering. Examples of such signs are exit routes and first aid. They mean the safe way to do something.

Warning signs are triangular in shape, with a yellow background, and black pictogram and lettering. They mean danger - proceed with caution

Mandatory signs are circular in shape, with a blue background and white pictogram. They mean "must do". Examples are wear hearing defenders in an ear protection zone.

Prohibited signs are round in shape, with a white background and a red perimeter band and diagonal stripe. The pictogram is black in colour. Examples are No smoking.

Fire equipment signs these are square or rectangular in shape, with a red background and white pictogram. This sign denotes the location of fire fighting equipment.

Illuminated signs and acoustic signals such as alarms, and also verbal and hand signals are also covered in the regulations. We will now look at each of these areas briefly:

Dangerous locations/traffic routes: In places where there is a risk of people or equipment colliding with obstacles, or where objects may fall (i.e. storage facilities), these should be marked with yellow and black, or red and white striped tape or boards.

Traffic routes for internal transport must be clearly identified by continuous coloured lines, preferably, yellow or white.

Illuminated signs: Where such signs are required e.g. on emergency escape routes in the event of an electrical failure, and then these must have a battery back-up.

AVOIDING SLIPS,TRIPS AND FALLS TABLE

Hazard
Control

Spillage (wet or dry)
Clean up spills immediately, ensuring that suitable cleaning materials and chemicals are used in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions. Suitable ‘wet floor’ signage must be displayed and areas may need to be cordoned off.
Trailing wires and cables
Ensure fixed equipment is sited to prevent cables crossing pedestrian routes. Restrict employee/pedestrian access. Avoid, for example, cleaning during times of pedestrian access. Provide appropriate warning signs. Use cable covers and/or securely fix to surfaces.
Accumulation/rubbish
Prevent the build up of accumulations by frequency of emptying containers. Provide adequate sized suitably covered containers.
Carpets/mats
Fix securely, replace when worn or holed and prevent curling edges. Replace by more suitable material e.g. rubber.
Slippery surfaces
Determine the cause and apply appropriate treatment. Replace surfaces. Provide appropriate warning signs. When caused by moving from a wet area to a dry floor surface, suitable footwear should, be provided where possible. Suitable mats may be provided at point of change.
Inadequate lighting
Provide additional lighting and/or increase levels of illumination. Provide increased natural lighting, e.g. glass panels or windows.
Changes of level
Highlight changes, for example, by painting suitable markings or conspicuous tread nosings. Provide better lighting and warning signs.

Good Housekeeping - Minimise the Risk of Fire in a Workplace

The control of highly combustible materials and sources of ignition must be coupled with high standards of housekeeping to ensure that combustible materials in any form, but particularly waste, do not present a fire risk. This applies to all areas of work since waste materials can accumulate in any circumstances and a build-up of dust and dirt can easily provide the fuel for fire in the right circumstances.

The accumulation of process waste, contaminated rags, packing materials and other paper products, and general refuse and dust must be prevented Oily, flammable and combustible rags are particular problems in many workplaces as they are easily ignited and may even ignite spontaneously; they should be placed in metal containers with fitting lids.

Routine Housekeeping should ensure that:
  • Waste bins are emptied regularly so that there is no accumulation of combustible materials.
  • Cupboards, liftshafts, spaces beneath conveyors, stairs, benches and gratings are regularly cleaned and kept free of litter and rubbish.
  • Safe disposal of all waste materials is arranged. “Unofficial” rubbish burning must be banned.
